More than $450,000 from the Kampung Pandai Besi 'A' and Kampung Lurong Dalam Fire Victims Charity Fund collection and Government Assistance was handed over to the fire victims of Kampung Pandai Besi 'A' and Kampung Lurong Dalam in Kampong Ayer last afternoon.
The contribution was aimed at alleviating the burden shouldered by the victims whose homes were gutted or damaged in a large fire on the 6th of December last year. The contributions made through the SMS Brunei Prihatin service from DST and Progresif Cellular were each received by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs; and Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. From the amount, $291,344.36 were collected through the donation boxes set up at mosques nationwide, government buildings and the private sector as well as donations from non-government agencies and organisations. The collection was also made through the SMS Brunei Prihatin service from DST and Progresif Cellular. Meanwhile, $159,000 was contributed by the government through the Community Development Department, JAPEM.
Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs as the Co-Chairperson of the Charity Fund Committee in his speech among other matters expressed his appreciation of the contributions handed out by the public.
