BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A 33-year-old local woman was sentenced to 30 months in jail yesterday after she pleaded guilty at the Bandar Magistrate's Court to 18 counts of cheating and forgery.

Vivi Yanti Haji Mohd Jali, represented by Defence Counsel Rozaiman Abdul Rahman, applied for a stay of execution on the sentence but was denied it by Senior Magistrate Haji Nabil Daraina bin Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Badaruddin yesterday, and ordered to serve her sentence immediately.

Vivi Yanti cheated six individuals of their monies totalling $29,380 by deceiving them into believing she was able to secure for these individuals, who represent companies, tenders from the Public Works Department, Brunei-Muara District Office, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Development and Brunei Shell Marketing as well as the Shell Transport Department Regulatory Body (STL) in the form of services spanning from May 2011 to 2012 and September to October 2014.

Vivi Yanti also forged government tender offer letters for convincing the individuals during the commission of the cheating offences.

DPP Emily Goh prosecuted the case.
