It takes Simone Taylor, 16, three hours to put varnish on them and she goes through several bottles of the stuff each month.
The teenager from Nuremberg, Germany, says she’s often asked about how she uses the bathroom.
‘Cleaning my teeth and using the toilet aren’t a problem,’ she said.
‘Funnily enough, a lot of people ask the toilet question when they see my nails for the first time.’
‘Showering is a bit more difficult. Sometimes my nails get caught in my hair, so I have to be extra careful.’
Simone, who hasn’t cut her nails since August 2014, finds it difficult to hold a pen or type on a keyboard so school can be difficult.
She gets around her inability to type by using her knuckles instead.
Simone cannot participate in most physical activities due to the length of her nails so she pretty much can’t take part in PE.
But the teenager wouldn’t change anything about her extra-long nails and once freaked out when she accidentally broke one of them.
‘My friends and I were climbing a gate that was stuck, and as I jumped down, my middle finger nail got stuck in the metal and broke,’ she said.
‘I started crying and remember screaming, “Why my nail? Anything but my nail.” My friends tried to calm me down but didn’t have much success.’
Simone decided to let her nails grow after watching an online nail art video.
It costs her approximately £25 to maintain her 14.8cm thumbnails and 11.8cm fingernails each month.
