Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr Somdy Douangdy, has urged relevant authorities to do their best to quickly complete three road construction projects in Xaysomboun Province that have been delayed for a couple of years.

The three roads have a combined length of more than 84 km and a combined cost of over 924.2 billion kip (USD 113.5 million).

According to the agreements signed between local authorities and contractors, the three construction projects were scheduled to be completed within 24 months after February 2014 but none of the projects have been completed since then.

“To deal with such a problem,” said Deputy Prime Minister Somday, “relevant authorities must urge project contractors to complete the construction works so that they can be put into public use in the near future.”

He also called on all relevant sectors to make sure international standards were applied to the three construction projects.

The first project is the construction of Road No. 2, connecting Phasangob village in Anouvong district with Viengthong village in Thathom district (50 km long, 7 metres wide). Four bridges will be built along the stretch.

This project was initially worth 356.89 billion kip (USD 43.83 million), but as of this month 465.18 billion (USD 57.14 million) has been spent on the construction and only 43% of the planned construction has been carried out by Thavysok Construction Development Company.

The second project is the construction of a 30.5-km stretch of Road No. 4 between Phouhuaxang and Aothay in Anouvong district. The project is 87% complete now. The road cost stated in the agreement was 263.36 billion kip (USD 32.35 million), but actual construction has been valued at 294.13 billion (USD 36.18 million). The road stretch is designed to be 6m wide. Two bridges will be constructed along the road. It is being constructed by Lukxay Road and Bridge Construction Company.

The third project – the construction of Road No. 5 linking Namyorn Bridge and Longcheng in Longcheng district – has a total length of 4 km and a 6m width. Three bridges will be constructed along the road. The project is carried out by Panyathilath Housing, Road, Bridge and Irrigation Construction Company at a cost of 304.02 billion kip (USD 37.34 million) according to the agreement signed between local authorities and contractor, but the actual construction of the project is valued at 325.07 billion kip (USD 39.93 million). Around 47% of the construction project activities have been carried out so far.
