A man was arrested because he didn’t return a rented copy of ‘Freddy Got Fingered’ in 2002.
James Meyers took out the video 14 years ago from a rental shop that has, unsurprisingly, since closed.
Now he has been charged with failure to return rental property – and could face a fine of up to $200 (£141).
James only found out there was an arrest warrant out for him when he was pulled over in Concord, North Carolina, because of a fault with his car’s rear light.
The officer checked his license, and around 25 minutes later asked him to step out of the car.
‘The officer said, “I don’t know how to tell you this, but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie ‘Freddie Got Fingered’ and never returned it”,’ Meyers said.
‘I thought he was joking.’
He was arrested later that day, and has to appear in court on April 27.
But it might not be all bad for him.
James tweeted his story to Tom Green, the star (and we use the term loosely) of ‘Freddy Got Fingered’, and the comedian offered to pay his fine for him.
Green told New York Daily News that he’s happy to support anyone who likes the film – an admittedly small number of people.
