PETALING JAYA

Celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan, confirmed that his actress daughter is filing for divorce from her husband of seven years.

In a series of Instagram posts, Chef Wan broke the silence surrounding his daughter Serina Redzuawan's "unhappy marriage" to Irishman Gavin Edward O’Luanaigh.

Chef Wan said he was sharing his thoughts on Serina's marriage publicly because there has been too much speculation in the media.

"After advising my son-in-law numerous times on the importance of a husband’s responsibility to provide monthly financial support to his wife and his refusal to accept my advice, I am very happy that my daughter is filing for divorce," said Chef Wan on Friday.

"We will go ahead with the legal proceedings to fight for her rights and justice too," he said.

The couple married in January 2010 and has two children.

Chef Wan said that in any marriage, the wife should be "spoilt by the husband".

But in Serina's case, she had to work hard to provide for her family.

"As a father, of course I feel sad for her," he said.

"There is no such thing as money is my money and your money also. You need to contribute to the household," he said.

Chef Wan said that he had given his ex-wife RM3,000 a month for her living allowances and bought her a three-bedroom apartment after their marriage ended.

He also said that he had been generous towards his children and grandchildren.

"Enough is enough, so if you don't want to listen to your father-in-law's advice, I have had it," said Chef Wan.

He said he believes his daughter deserves a better and happier life.

"Marriage is always a gamble but you must be truthful and happy," he said.

"Yes, I am sad for my grandchildren. But I believe with all our attention and love, they will survive," he added.

Chef Wan said he "is proud of my daughter, and she is a hard worker, responsible and independent" and "not the type to demand for material things".

"Sometimes I nag about her wearing clothes that look so cheap... and I scolded her for not having good taste in dressing," said Chef Wan.

Chef Wan reminded all Muslim husbands to remember the wedding vows they had recited on their responsibilities to their wives.

He also said that it is important "not to take others for granted" and to "learn how to respect your own wife".
