This Russian space-bound robot is being trained to shoot guns from its hands, but the country’s deputy Prime Minister insists it is not a ‘Terminator’.
The FEDOR (Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research), which is due to travel to space in 2021, has been filmed firing guns at a target board.
Russia’s deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin posted the clip on Twitter with the caption: ‘Russian fighting robots – guys with iron nature.’
FEDOR’s creators say shooting practice should help the robot improve its motor skills and decision-making, according to the Independent.
The android was created for the purpose of rescue work, but engineers have suggested it could have military uses.
However Mr Rogozin sought to quash claims that it could be the next Terminator.
He tweeted: ‘Robot platform F.E.D.O.R. showed shooting skills with two hands.
‘We are not creating a Terminator, but artificial intelligence that will be of great practical significance in various fields.’
FEDOR is expected to be the only passenger on board Russia’ Federation spacecraft when it makes its journey from earth.
The android, which is being developed by Android Technics and the Advanced Research Fund, has been taught a wide range of advanced skills.
Fears that it could become a killer-robot, come as several warnings have been issued on artificial intelligence in recent months.
Lord Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal and Emeritus Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge, said that machines could take over from humans within a few centuries.
