The Senior Officials Meeting - ASEAN Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry, SOM-AMAF, and the ASEAN Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry, AMAF, the ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Livestock, ASWGL, continue to recognise the significant socio-economic impacts of animal diseases as well as the development and implementation of strategic frameworks and mechanisms at national and regional levels. The initiatives are in line with addressing challenges that is affecting ASEAN and globally such as food insufficiency, effects on livelihood and movement of animals due to zoonosis and public health, international and regional economy and trade through harmonization of standards as well as climate change with its impact to livestock production. This was stated by Dayang Hajah Aidah binti Haji Mohd Hanifah, the Director of Agriculture and Agrifood at the Opening of the 25th ASWGL Meeting, yesterday.

 

The 3-day meeting is attended by the ASEAN member state delegates and government officials, as well as ASEAN Secretariat. ASWGL is a technical body under the ASEAN key initiatives for livestock development, animal diseases and threats to the human health through zoonotic diseases. The meeting not only provide an avenue for sharing and updating achievements and activities of the network over the last years, but also facilitate the necessary decision making to advance the agenda of the ASWGL and forge new partnerships through relevant projects in the region on livestock.
