Police here are preparing for the 14th general election (14GE), which could be called any time.

Kuching District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai told reporters yesterday that the light strike force (LSF) has already carried out “early preparations” for the next parliamentary election.

“We have got them ready for the drill, their uniforms, the equipment and so forth. This is to ensure that our LSF is always equipped with the latest instruments and that for fitness as well,” he said after the police monthly assembly.

During the assembly, some LSF members staged a drill where two smoke bombs were fired.

Smoke bombs have been used by authorities across the globe to control and disperse crowds.

Abang Ahmad said the assembly aimed to keep police informed of the latest developments besides reminding them of the importance of upholding integrity and discipline.

He announced that some personnel would be taking part in a 5km run organised by the City Joggers’ Club next month.

“Of course there are other categories for members of the public. This 5km run is for PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police). The run will start from MBKS (Kuching South City Council) at 6am.

“We have to spread the word among ourselves, that the police will run together with the general public. It is for health, trim and fit. It is also to show that the police are always with the community,” he said, adding this is the first such run organised for PDRM.

Meanwhile, City Joggers’ Club president Chan Boon Teck said registration for the run closed on Thursday.

“So far, we have around 1,500 participants. We have categories 10km, 20km and 30km, but the 5km is for PDRM,” he added.
