Jerudong International School (JIS) practices an eco-friendly environment throughout the academic year encouraging students to reduce, reuse and recycle. JIS held its annual Earth Day on Thursday to complement the activities and workshops planned throughout the week celebrated as Earth Week, a press release stated.
Activities in Earth Week have all been organised by the Eco-JIS student committee.
This year, the focus was on waste management awareness with the aim of reducing the waste generated by cans, plastics and paper.
Eco-JIS envisioned encouraging recycling and upcycling through various initiatives such as implementing new recycling bins across the school and art projects that required students to design lamps made from sustainable materials. Last term, Eco-JIS achieved another stage towards becoming an eco-friendly school by instigating a 'de-lamping' project - reducing energy usage within the school by removing a total of 500 light bulbs where it was deemed unnecessary. This project enabled the committee to identify which parts of the school were using the most electricity.
During Earth Day, a $2 donation was contributed by each student who participated in casual clothes day and instead of uniform, wore green and blue colours. Students were actively involved in the fundraiser by having a 'Zero Waste Food Sale' where they sold food and implemented a 'no plastic' policy which required them to use banana leaves as takeaway holders instead.
A key theme of the week was the importance of upcycling and reducing the use of plastic in the school.
Students showcased their creativity in upcycling by redesigning recycled plastic bottles into stationery pen holders as well as fabric bracelets and accessories. Mini competitions such as the `Upcycling Accessories' competition and 'What not to do with your waste' video competition were held to start the eventful week of raising awareness on upcycling recyclable materials.
The money raised this week will be used to fund future Eco-JIS initiatives and also includes a donation to a clean water charity. Recently winning first place in Green Brunei Eco Drive's recycling competition, JIS students aim to inspire future leaders of Brunei to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Eco-JIS (Junior school and Senior school students) are an active student-led committee that previously received a Silver Eco School Award from Eco-Schools. They are recognised for their achievement in working towards a sustainable lifestyle and plan to continue more eco-friendly initiatives in the future.
