Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg in his Labour Day message today reiterated the Sarawak government’s commitment to transform the state’s traditional economy to a digital economy in the next couple of decades.
He reasoned this was to give hope for a better future for Sarawak’s youth, who make up about 60 per cent of the bulk of 1.3 million workers in the state.
“I believe failure to embrace the worldwide trend towards a digital economy will be a disservice to our youth who are continuously moving towards the Internet of Everything (IoE),” he said in his Labour Day message issued by the Chief Minister’s Office.
Sarawak’s plan to move to a digital economy was announced and deliberated at the International ICT Infrastructure and Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (Idecs) 2017 held early last month.
Abang Johari also wished all Sarawakians and non- Sarawakians as well, who are in one way or another part of the 1.3 million-strong workforce in the state a happy Labour Day.
“Each and everyone of you in the public sector or private sector, no matter what level of work you are involved in, is important to the progress and well-being of the society and the economy of Sarawak.
“On behalf of the state government I would like to say thank you to all of you and I sincerely hope that you will keep up the good work,” he said.
He also called on every employer to treat their employees with dignity and ensure that they are always judicious with their treatment.
“I also wish to call on our workers to continue with the effort to learn and relearn and to reskill and upskill in order to stay relevant in the ever-changing work environment.”
