The National Assembly (NA) meeting on May10 approved a draft-amended Law on the People’s Prosecutor, which will focus on better protection of state and society interests.

The first edition of the Law on the People’s Prosecutor was approved at the 2nd Ordinary Session of the Lao Supreme People’s Assembly in November 1989 and promulgated on January 1990. The first amendment was made in October 2003 and the second in November 2009.

The latest amendment to the law was proposed at the ongoing 3rd Ordinary Session of the National Assembly’s 8th Legislatureby President of the Public Prosecutor’s Office Khamsane Souvong on May 10.

Some articles of the 2009 draft-amended Law on the People’s Prosecutor had been found to be incomplete in some aspects. Thus, the content in some articles has been reviewed and added to, so as to respond to the realistic conditions and be effective, Mr Khamsane pointed out.

This law will be an important legal tool for the Supreme People's Prosecutor to manage its role and duties more effectively and focus on the protection of the state’s benefit and social security and contribute to national protection and development of the country.

The current amendments to the law started in the end of 2016.

The draft-amended Law on the People’s Prosecutor consists of nine parts, nine chapters and 74 articles, of which 44 are amended articles, four are new and 26 are old.
