Harry Kane Nets Four, Son Bags Brace As Spurs Thrash Leicester

Thursday was all about Harry Kane as the English international bagged four goals to bring his league-leading tally to 26.

 May 19th, 2017  |  10:33 AM  |   391 views

Four goals from the Premier League's top scorer, Harry Kane, helped Tottenham to their biggest ever away win in the Premier League against outclassed Leicester. Spurs were dominant from the off and had several opportunities to go ahead before a Son Heung-min cutback set up Kane's opener. Son doubled the lead before the break to give the away side a comfortable cushion. Leicester came out strongly in the second half and reduced the deficit, but Tottenham regained their composure and ran out comfortable winners.

After the emotion of playing their final game at White Hart Lane and securing a second-place finish, Tottenham might have been expected to take their foot off the pedal. Instead, they maintained their intensity and desire, and Kane's four goals now take his season's tally to 26, two goals ahead of Everton's Romelu Lukaku with one game left to play in the race for the Premier League's Golden Boot.

Very few, though one could accuse Spurs of thinking the job was done by half-time and going off the boil for the first 15 minutes of the second half. During that time, they were second to most balls and conceded possession needlessly. A better team than Leicester might have taken advantage by scoring more than one goal.

Manager rating out of 10

8 -- It's a measure of how committed the Tottenham players are to his beliefs and methods that Mauricio Pochettino can coax such a sensational performance out of them when there was comparatively little at stake. Pochettino has achieved that rare gift of creating a team that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Hugo Lloris, 7 -- Jamie Vardy was arguably offside when Lloris sprinted out to intercept the ball in the build-up to Leicester's consolation goal, but there was little he could have done thereafter. His handling was secure in difficult, wet conditions and his distribution was also solid.

DF Moussa Sissoko, 7 -- With Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier out with injury, Sissoko was drafted in to play right-back. Coped well defensively, though his final ball going forward sometimes lacked confidence and precision.

DF Toby Alderweireld, 8 -- Another towering performance alongside Jan Vertonghen that allowed Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez few opportunities. Played a sensational long ball through to Son to set up Spurs' opener and supplied the cross that led to Kane's second.

DF Eric Dier, 8 -- Worked hard and unobtrusively at the centre of the defence. Quick to spot danger and came close to scoring with a first-half header. A real team player.

DF Jan Vertonghen, 8 -- The Belgian centre-back has raised his game to a new level in recent weeks and never looked discomforted. Was never troubled by Vardy's pace as his positional sense was impeccable.

DF Ben Davies, 8 -- Another top-class display from a player who has significantly grown in confidence since being given an uninterrupted run in the team following Danny Rose's injury in late January. Secure in defence, threatening on the break.

MF Victor Wanyama, 8 -- Tireless in the key role of defensive midfield while still having the energy to create the extra man to overload opponents in attack. Picked out a key pass to Dele Alli in the build-up to Son's first goal.

MF Mousa Dembele, 7 -- There were rumours that Dembele was carrying an injury and at times he appeared somewhat anonymous. But even a Dembele that was operating at less than 100 percent was still far too good and strong for the Leicester midfield.

MF Son Heung-min, 8 -- At first it didn't look as if it was going to be his night. With the score still all square, Son shot when he should have passed and then blazed over when put through. But thereafter found his rhythm and Leicester couldn't cope. Set up Kane's first and took both his goals with great poise and finesse.

MF Dele Alli, 8 -- Not at his most influential but still has the ability to create something out of nothing. His chip to set up Son's first goal was sublime. As was his ability to leave two defenders for dead when being pressed near the goal-line midway through the second half.

FW Harry Kane, 9 -- His four goals now make him the Premier League's top scorer and few would bet against him adding to that tally in the final game against Hull on Sunday. He is now the complete striker. He doesn't just have the knack of being in the right place at the right time to finish off moves, he runs the channels tirelessly and creates openings for others.

FW Vincent Janssen, NR -- Late replacement for Son. Did manage to get the ball in the net but was correctly adjudged to be offside.

MF, Filip Lesniak, NR -- Was given a debut late on with the game already won.

MF Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, NR -- Brought on to run the clock down.
