A local man, Mohd Azam Zaki bin Haji Mohd Zain was convicted by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate Court after being found guilty of two charges under section 420 read with section 109 of the penal code chapter 22.
Investigation conducted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau revealed that sometime in September 2008, Mohd Azam Zaki bin Haji Mohd Zain, whom at that time was working with BSP as a scheduler at East Operation Department, EOP engaged in a conspiracy to deceive Brunei Shell Petroleum, BSP, with Cheiu Vun Thian, Managing Director of Voon Hua Hardware Company Sdn Bhd into believing that BSP required the purchase of master toolsets proto 99663 including the roller cabinet. As a result of the conspiracy, BSP awarded 22 purchase orders for 22 sets of Master Toolsets Proto 99663 including the roller cabinet to Voon Hua Hardware Company Sdn Bhd and BSP subsequently approved two payments amounting $1,033.00 and $21,000.00 respectively to the said company.
The Magistrate Court sentenced the defendant to 14 months imprisonment for each charge which is to be served concurrently. The sentence takes effect from today, the 23rd of May 2017. Meanwhile, previously on the 4th of May 2017, Cheiu Vun Thian was also charged under the same section 420 read with section 109 of the penal code chapter 22 and pleaded not guilty. Trial dated for case against Cheiu Vun Thian is fixed for September and October this year.
