The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently funded two courses on food security and the International Framework for Court Excellence at the Lao-Singapore Training Centre.
A total of 40 Lao government officials attended the two courses, which were conducted by Ko Khee Hwee of Singapore-based International Business Dynamics and District Judge Tan Boon Heng, of the Singapore Judicial College.
The “Building Food Security” course, which was held from 15-19 May 2017, equipped participants with frameworks and skills for ensuring sustainable food security through the sharing of insights on Singapore’s experience and policies in managing food security issues.
The “Advanced International Framework for Court Excellence Workshop”, which was held from 16-19 May 2017, built on a foundation course on the same topic held last year to train officials in use of the International Framework for Court Excellence, a quality management system designed to assist courts wishing to improve the performance of their courts. Participants were taught to identify areas of court performance capable of improvement and to develop innovative ways to address issues, improve transparency and clarity, enhance access, and reduce backlogs and overly complex procedures, which detract from court quality and efficiency.
The courses were conducted pursuant to the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI).
Under the IAI, Singapore conducts 25 to 30 courses a year at the Lao-Singapore training Centre, focusing on areas of public governance, finance, urban management, hospitality and tourism, civil aviation, as well as IT skills and the English Language.
About 600 Lao officials are trained each year and more than 12,000 Lao government officials have benefited from the Ministry’s various training programmes under the Singapore Cooperation Programme since 1993.
