JALAN STADIUM, BERAKAS

The future of Brunei Darussalam depends on its education system, especially the ability of the school leadership in meeting current challenges.

This was stated by the Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, during the 6th National Education Forum held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday.

He emphasised the need to have a sense of urgency to enhance overall achievements of students in both academic and marketable skills to enable them to be competitive in the global scene.

"This requires school leaders to set the direction, taking responsibility for putting learning as a priority, especially today, when education in Brunei Darussalam is going through a transformation with a slew of initiatives being implemented at the primary and secondary education levels," he added.

"As school leaders, it is their responsibility to make a difference in children's education and encourage our next generation of leaders. Great and passionate school leaders are vital to our education system because they change the trajectory of children's lives for the better.

They stir curiosity and illuminate the power of learning," said the minister.

According to the minister, as part of the continuous effort towards creating high quality school leaders, the Ministry of Education (MoE) in collaboration with the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), has embarked on a training and professional development programme for school leaders in March last year with the establishment of the Brunei Programme for Senior School Leaders (BPSSL).

The programme focuses on developing school leaders' teaching as well as overall leadership abilities to help them efficiently lead a team and manage an organisation and its transformation.

"At the same time, NCTL and ILIA with inputs from our school leaders have also developed the Brunei Darussalam School Leadership Standards (BDSLS) with the hope of creating high-quality school leadership to achieve our Brunei Vision 2035," he said.

"These standards will provide opportunities for serving school leaders to improve as well as strengthen the training, development and recruitment of aspiring school leaders."
