TAWAU

Royal Malaysian Customs Department Sabah director Madrim Tasan has advised companies that have received friendly reminder letters to declare the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to do so before the three-month period.

Madrim said those who had received letters from the Customs needed to act within the period to avoid full auditing by the department.

He said many companies that failed to declare were identified and he advised them send a correct declaration to avoid penalties which could be heavier.

He said the letters were sent in two phases to companies that failed to declare their GST, and the friendly reminder approach aimed to inform companies through education rather than through enforcement.

Madrim said the department had identified 62,000 out of 441,000 companies and friendly reminders were sent to 21,000 companies in the first phase, and 41,000 companies in the second phase.

He said the companies were given three months and advised them to do so to avoid stern action.

He said this when witnessing the handing over of task of the Tawau Kastam head Datu Kassim Datu Bangsawan who is retiring after 27 years with the department handed over his task to acting head Habib Mohd Fairuz yesterday at Wisma Customs Tawau.

Meanwhile, he also called on the Tawau Customs officers to work as a team and get ready for the department’s change to corporate system.
