Call For New System At Wharves To Ease Congestion

Kapit Terminal still crowded – the situation at Belaga Wharf yesterday.

KAPIT

The two gateways to and from Kapit, namely Belaga Wharf and Kapit Terminal, remain crowded with travellers six days after the Gawai Dayak celebration.

The travellers either comprise those heading to Sibu to return to work, or those arriving here from Sibu, Belaga or Baleh to return to various logging camps or road construction sites at Jalan Mujong to Putai or Jalan Kapit to Song.

As a short-term fix for the congestion, many have suggested that the Kapit Terminal be used for departures and Belaga Wharf for arrivals.

Another proposal put forward was to require arriving boats, whose passengers have disembarked, to berth elsewhere to ensure they do not block the path of yet-to-arrive boats.

This would minimise safety risks to passengers as well as porters who would not have to maneuver from one boat to another, whilst lugging belongings, to get to their vessel.
