Curb On Migrant Smuggling

Police have stepped up operation in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) in conjunction with the festive season to curb crime, including smuggling of migrants.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said patrol in the ESSZone had been enhanced in view of its potential to be used for smuggling of illegal immigrants in and out of the country.
“So, we are prepared for any possibilities that could stir security issues, like boat collapse and cross-border crime.
“Meeting with district police chiefs in ESSZone has been held and preliminary measures were discussed to further strengthen monitoring, especially in the state waters from infiltration by criminals,” he told reporters after handing over of contributions to about 80 members of the security forces based in Pulau Mabul, Kapalai and Singgahmata Reef here.

The ESSZone area covers the waters off Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Sandakan and Beluran.
Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) president Datuk Seri Panglima Gan Sau Wah commended the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) for its continuous efforts in beefing up coastline and maritime security in the east coast of Sabah.
Gan, who is also the president of Semporna Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC), said the local communities especially business folks had regained confidence in the security in the east coast.
He hoped that the security in the area could be maintained so that the people could live and work in peace.
Ramli’s inspection to the island outposts and breaking of fast with the security personnel showed that the latter was a caring leader, Gan said when hosting a supper for Datuk Ramli Din and his delegation who just returned from inspecting island outposts near Semporna on Tuesday. .
He added that the local Chinese community was also confident of the leadership of Semporna police chief Peter Umbuas.
Gan also stressed the importance of strong ties and cooperation among the security forces of Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.
“Seamless trilateral cooperation between these countries is the only way to make people living along the coastline feel safe,” he said.
Also present at the event were SUCCC Youth chief cum SCCC deputy president Peter Gan and Senator Wilfred Yong.
