Local Duo Sentenced to Jail for a Series of Thefts

 April 26th, 2016  |  05:19 AM  |   3518 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Two local men were yesterday given jail terms after they pleaded guilty in the Bandar Magistrate's Court to thefts.

Haji Awang Sharol bin Ali, 39, was handed a 10 months jail term, while Inayatullah bin Matasin, 20, was sentenced to 26 months.

Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman took into account the guilty pleas of the defendants and their clean record.

However, aggravating factors take a toll on the defendants' case, where they had committed the offences in the wee hours when the items were vulnerable, and that the offences, committed in March 2016, were well planned. The magistrate believed that had they not been arrested, the defendants would have continued with their thieving spree.

DPP Dayangku Hazirah binti Pengiran Yusof informed the court that the duo struck a house in Tanjung Bunut between midnight on March 11 and 5.30 am on March 12, where they successfully stole a gas cylinder.

In March, they stole an air conditioner, a baby cot, a table and a chair from a house in Jalan Beribi in the daytime.

At 5am on March 2, 2016 Inayatullah stole a car from a business premises at Kampong Kiulap. Inayatullah again acted alone between March 10 and 14, 2016 to steal a radio tape player from a car parked at a residential flat in Old Airport.
