Two teenagers were rescued from an angry mob that foiled their attempt to steal a motorcycle at a residential area in Bekasi, West Java, early Sunday.
The two, identified only as NF, 17, and DH, 14, were attempting to steal the motorcycle from a house in Margahayu, East Bekasi, at 1:30 a.m. when two residents on siskamling (community patrol) caught them and called out for help.
East Bekasi Police chief Comr. Susgarwanto said one of the residents shouted when the teenagers tried to flee the scene, prompting other residents to chase after them and capture them.
“People quickly came to the crime scene because of the shout,” he said on Sunday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Some residents reportedly began to beat the teenagers in their faces when a police officer arrived.
During investigation, the two suspects said they were forced to steal to prepare for Idul Fitri.
They also said it was their first attempt to do so and that they had scouted the area beforehand.
The police have called on people to heighten patrol to prevent more crimes, which often occur during the fasting month of Ramadhan. (wit)
