Ramadhan is in its last 10 nights when Muslims throughout the world perform additional acts of worship to gain Allah's promised rewards for all good deeds on Lailatul Qadar or the Night of the Decree. Apart from religious deeds several activities during the 10 night period are long practised traditions among Bruneians.
The month of Ramadhan brings many secrets, benefits and rewards to the Muslim ummah seeking happiness in this world and the Hereafter. Every night, mosques, surau and religious halls are glorified and enlivened with acts of devotion to Allah the Creator. The old, the young and even children gather at the places of worship to perform Tarawih and Witir prayers after the obligatory Isha' prayer. Then, they read Al-Quran in the Tadarus and stay at the mosque for iktikaf or the night vigil, performing religious and other good acts or deeds. This take place all over the world during the month of Ramadhan when the doors of heaven are open and Allah forgives the ummah.
Ramadhan, a month so holy and blessed provides the Muslim umah the opportunity to reap Allah's rewards as they strive towards true and lasting success and happiness. With all the goodness it offers, Ramadhan is the climax of Allah's love and affection towards people who are willing to make sacrifices in the quest for the acceptance and forgiveness of the Most Sublime Creator. Ramadhan is the best best arena for increasing one's devotion and faith in the face of post Ramadhan challenges and the team one meets Allah the Almighty.
Apart from providing spiritual lessons that teach the ummah to be wary of the influence of desire or lust, fasting also teaches the ummat to be patient, prudent, and courteous and other good attributes. The one month of fasting in Ramadhan is the best opportunity for each person to return to good behaviour because fasting can purify people because it is not simply refraining from food and drinks.
The purity and sanctity of Ramadhan produce commendable character or behaviour among people such as generosity and responsibility towards the less fortunate. Various kinds of aid is extended to them to help them enjoy fasting and celebrate Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. Donations from donors who include non-Muslims pour for the underprivileged, a manifestation of Bruneians commitment to Islam and their social responsibility towards curing society's weaknesses.
Ramadhan also provides Muslims with the opportunity to gain more blessings by performing additional religious deeds and acts. These include cleaning cemeteries, reading Surah Yasin and Tahlil. The voluntary cleaning of cemeteries is a charity act that instil cooperation and good relations.
Apart from performing numerous acts of devotion, many of the country's Muslims also engage in small business during Ramadhan. The holy month is special and full of goodness which is proven in the opportunities that come only in reaping Allah's blessings and rewards about also in gaining extra or side income.
Each year, the month of Ramadhan brings blessings as Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam says in a hadith, "the beginning of Ramadhan is blessing, the middle is full of Allah's forgiveness, and the final part, freedom from Hell fire for those who fast." May these values grow in the country and among the future generations.
