JAKARTA

An Indonesian migrant worker in Taiwan, identified only with the initial M, allegedly sent a package containing 11 grams of crystal methamphetamine to her husband, MDS, who lives in Pati, Central Java.

The narcotics were disguised inside a package of tea, said Agus Suyanto, the enforcement and prosecution head of the Central Java-Yogyakarta Customs office.

“The package arrived at the Semarang Post Office [in Semarang, Central Java]. The detection dog sensed something suspicious. We opened it and tested the crystals found inside at laboratory,” he said on Wednesday.

Thanks to cooperation with the post office and the Central Java Narcotics Agency (BNNP), the alleged recipient, MDS, who is a farmer from Bermi village in Gembong district, was arrested.

“MDS was arrested on Tuesday. We have six days to investigate if he is part of an international drug ring or merely a user,” Central Java BNNP Head Tri Agus Heru Prasetyo said, adding that it was the second time the agency had foiled the shipment of narcotics via mail this year.

He said the majority of smuggled narcotics to Central Java were from China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Germany.

Also on Wednesday, the Semarang Metropolitan Police announced they had arrested drug dealer suspect Arvian Nova Prasetyo and seized 100 ecstasy pills and 1.5 grams of crystal meth.

“He was arrested on June 12 after police officers became suspicious after seeing him digging near a tree. It turned out there were ecstasy pills in there,” said Semarang Metropolitan Police chief Sr. Comr. Abiyoso Seno Aji. (bbs)
