For a week now the country has been buzzing with festive activities as the people prepare for Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. Up to the last moments today, hectic preparations were still taking place, which is a normal situation every time Aidil Fitri comes around. Among the staple of Hari Raya which stands on the verge of being obligatory is new clothes. For some, there is no Aidil Fitri without a least a pair or two pairs of new clothes.
Tailors were busy trying to please their customers by offering various fashions or styles for Hari Raya. It is very true that the month of Ramadhan brings much extra income to entrepreneurs, especially tailors. Men's clothes are given a more modern touch befitting today's fashion trends. From the traditional 'baju cara Melayu' comes offshoots such as Malay jackets, the MIB shirt and others. The price also changes to match the new styles or fashions.
For the women, baju kurung is still the favourite, not only for festive seasons but also for daily wear. According to the dressmakers, fashion trends change every year. They say the modern robes and batik clothes with beads or 'stones' are very popular now. Each lady client normally makes two to three, sometimes more pairs of clothes during the festive season.
For parents, family matters come first. In this case it's the Hari Raya clothes for the children. Children's clothes especially for girls are not to be left behind. They too follow current designs and trends.
People, who did not have the time to visit the tailors and those who do not want to spend too much, go for the readymade or off the rack clothes. And with today's technology, it is easy to order your favourite dress or fashion online. However, buyers have to be wise and discreet in their choices to ensure the sizes fit, and the clothes are comfortable, beautiful and modest to wear.
On the modesty or religious side, especially during the Hari Raya celebrations, Muslims are encouraged to dress properly ad modestly. Islam does not set what fashion or colour the dress is for performing acts of worship or daily use. The main thing is the clothes are clean, modest and suitable for Muslims.
