KENINGAU

A local man was shot dead by his cousin with a bakakuk (homemade gun) while hunting in the forest in the Sook sub-district here on Monday.

District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Ahmad Jawila said the incident occurred on July 17 at around 12.01 am.

He said the victim was identified as Christanius Lukas, aged 38, from Kampung Tulid in Sook.

“Investigation at the scene foun dthat the victim was shot from 15.75 meters and a post-mortem at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu revealed that the victim was shot in the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver,” he told a press conference at the District Police Headquarters here yesterday.

Ahmad said that on July 17 at 6.08pm a police report was lodged by a police officer saying that on the same day he was informed by a village chief from Sook regarding the incident and a police report was made for further action.

“At the time of the incident, the victim was hunting with the suspect, the suspect’s father and a friend in the forest. The suspect’s friend had returned home earlier leaving the three of them.

“The suspect and the victim decided to split up for the purpose of hunting and both of them carried a firearm or bakakuk.

“The suspect later saw some movement about 15.75 meters away and fired at the object. However upon checking, the suspect found that he had shot his cousin,” he said.

Ahmad said the suspect tried to lift the victim but did not succeed and ran to his father to inform him of what happened.

His father later went to the village chief’s house who informed the police about the incident.

He said the on-site inspection found a bullet around the chest and abdomen of the victim, while a firearm was also found near him.

According to Ahmad, the suspect had also shown the firearm used to shoot the victim and the police have seized both firearms belonging to the victim and the suspect, four bullets of various colors, a machete and a knife.

He said the suspect was now remanded for investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

“The police will also investigate the bullet if it was sold by a licensed bullet agent and will not hesitate to take action including suspending their business licencee,” he said.

Also present at the press conference was CID Chief, ASP Lee Nyuk Kim and Commercial Crime division Chief, Inspector Kahar Ariffin.
