Strengthening Relations With Relatives Is Obligatory

Strengthening relations include doing good and being gentle to other people, providing advice and assistance to those who need them as well as being sensitive towards their feelings. Strengthening relations need to be prioritised especially among family members as well as those with family ties. This was among the matters highlighted in yesterday's Friday Sermon on 'Strengthening Relations'. In the sermon, the Imam or prayer leader said that strengthening relations with relatives is obligatory, while cutting these ties off is considered sinful. The prayer leader added that those who cut off ties with others are committing huge sins and will be forbidden from entering paradise. The cause of strained relations are usually due to disputes or misunderstandings related to properties, inheritance, debt, sedition, slander, arrogance and self-centredness. Besides these, disputes between our children, siblings and neighbours can also bring about strained relations. The prayer leader, however, reminded that the responsibility of mending strained relations does not lie solely on the two parties in dispute, but also lie on the shoulders of relatives and friends, who play important roles as middle persons in mediating and mending strained relations. In this regard, the prayer leader also called all Muslims to strive to look after and further strengthens their relations with others, as well as to find solutions to disputes as all Muslims are related.
