Society plays an equally important role in assisting the development and growth of special needs children, by having a perspective that these special individuals are not weak, but are in fact able to benefit and contribute towards society, religion and nation. Awang Haji Harun bin Haji Junid, the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs highlighted the matter during the Hari Raya get-together and celebration of the Down Syndrome Association, ABLE, yesterday. According to Awang Haji Harun, academic programmes or activities related to Down Syndrome need to be continued and developed from time to time, especially the parents and guardians of these special children, who act as the facilitators in providing them guidance and education. The function continued with the presentation of green packets to the Down Syndrome individuals. The establishment of the Down Syndrome Association, ABLE, came from the realization by parents on the need to fight for the rights of children born with Down Syndrome. It also acts as a platform for individuals with Down Syndrome to become independent citizens who can contribute towards the society.
