Swift action and hard work by the police here resulted in the arrest of four members of a car break-in and theft group.
Geng Abon, said city police chief ACP M Chandra, had been active since last month and was involved in four cases around the state capital.
The four suspects aged between 23 and 37, were all tested positive for drug use and three of them had criminal records, he said, adding that the police were now on the manhunt for a fifth gang member by the name of Nazrul bin Edin@Totong whose last known address was Kampung Kota Tuaran, to facilitate in the investigations.
Chandra said this gang was very daring as they would commit the break-in of vehicles in public places.
“They would look around for vehicles which have bags or things of value left in them, especially in highly visible places like on the seats. One of them would crack the windscreen first before his accomplice breaks the glass with his fist.
“They would then grab the bag and if they have time, look around inside the vehicle for anything else that they can take,” Chandra said.
With their arrest, the police solved four cases reported in Likas, Tanjung Aru, Luyang and Menggatal respectively.
Police also seized three vehicles from the suspects, he said, adding that their latest victim was a businessman who had left a bag containing RM6,400 in the front seat of his vehicle parked at Plaza Juta Likas.
The suspects’ actions were caught by a CCTV footage and the police used it to identify them.
“We would like to remind the public not to leave valuables within sight in their vehicles. We also urge the public to report any individuals of suspicious manner that they may encounter.
“Be vigilant and make a note of the person’s clothing, build, face, vehicle used and registration number if possible, as all these information will be useful in police investigations,” he added.
