National Athletes Preparing For the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council this afternoon made another visit to oversee the preparations made by the national athletes who will compete at the 29th South East Asian or SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Today His Royal Highness went to observe the training carried out by athletes taking part in the sepak takraw, badminton and athletic events. The games will take place from the 19th until the 31st of this month.
His Royal Highness first visited the Menglait Sports Complex to see the preparations and training carried out by the sepak takraw and badminton athletes. Upon arrival, His Royal Highness was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohamad Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. Also present was His Royal Highness's son, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul 'Aleem. In the sepak takraw event, Brunei will be represented by 12 athletes. All the athletes have participated in a number of matches overseas and won bronze medal in the Beach Sports Championship in Vietnam last year.
His Royal Highness also scrutinised the national badminton athletes undergoing their training. Jasper Yu Woon Chai will represent the country in the Male Single category. Jasper Yu who is currently 199th in the world rankings represented Brunei Darussalam in the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
His Royal Highness then visited the Track and Field Complex to watch the training of the national athletes. During today's tour, His Royal Highness in a sabda reminded and encouraged the national athletes to work harder and be more confident for the upcoming 29th SEA Games. For the athletic event, Brunei will be represented by 5 athletes among them are Awang Fakhri bin Ismail and Awang Mohd Noor Firdaus Ar-Rasyid bin Haji Muhd Idris in the 100 and 200 metres respectively.
Brunei Darussalam for the first time took part in SEA Games in 1977. To date, the country has managed to collect 12 gold medals, 46 silver and 167 bronze. The country's best achievement was in 1999 when Brunei Darussalam hosted the SEA Games with a collection of 4 gold medals, 12 silver and 32 bronze.
