The state police are sending a clear message that they would not condone indiscipline from officers and other personnel that would tarnish the image of the force.
State Commissioner of Police Datuk Amer Awal said they would take appropriate action against officers and other personnel if they failed to comply.
He said if their misconduct was proven they would be brought before the court for disciplinary action to be taken against them.
Amer said this at a press conference held at state police headquarters here yesterday following the arrest of six police personnel for allegedly being involved in money extortion.
He said all six suspects had been remanded by a magistrate’s court for three days starting yesterday. They are being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code.
Amer reiterated that police had arrested the suspects, and investigations were now on-going to determine how long they have been doing it (extortion).
When asked if the suspects had prior disciplinary problems Amer said he could not say much on it at the moment because investigations were under way.
He also said that since the case took place here, the state police would be conducting the investigation.
“Appropriate action will be taken, followed by the procedure of handing over the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
The arrests came about after two individuals (businessmen) lodged police reports in Batu Kawa on Aug 3 and in Sematan on Aug 8, alleging that several policemen had extorted money from them.
A police D9 team arrested the six police personnel in their homes and work places in Kuching, Padawan and Lundu during an operation from 10pm Aug 8 to 3am the next day.
“One of the suspects is a 53-year-old policeman with the rank of inspector attached to the management department under the licensing division at IPK (state police headquarters) here. Five others are lower-ranked policemen between 25 and 32 years old attached to various units at Kuching District police headquarters.
State CID chief SAC Datuk Dev Kumar was also present at the press conference.
