The Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE) was officially launched by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Institute City Campus (ICC) in Bangunan Yayasan Sarawak here yesterday.

The private entity provides training for the private sector and organisations as well as conducts the SCOPE Circle, a monthly knowledge sharing platform where speakers from reputable organisations share insights on various fields of expertise.

Also held in conjunction with the launch was the exchange of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SCOPE and its strategic partners Sarawak Business Federation (SBF), Singapore-Cambodia International Academy (SCIA), Ratings Agency Malaysia (RAM), Hay Group Sdn Bhd and European School of Management and Technology Berlin (ESMTB).

State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani represented SCOPE in his capacity as its chairman to exchange the MoU with the partners. SBF was represented by its president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg, SCIA by managing director Anselm Chu Jin Hwa, RAM by its group CEO and executive director Datuk Seri K Govindan, and Hay Group represented by its senior principal Mohammad Iesa Morshidi.

The representative from ESMTB could not attend the MoU exchange due to unforeseen circumstances.

Among those present during the launch were Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Utilities Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong; Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah; Assistant Minister of Corporate Affairs Abdullah Saidol, State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, Deputy DUN Speaker Dato Gerawat Gala, SCOPE’s CEO Dr Asleena Helmi and members of its board of directors, Datu Dr Sabariah Putit, Datu Abu Bakar Marzuki and Azmi Bujang.

SCOPE in a statement said among its initial foray was the International ICT Infrastructure and Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (Idecs) held in April at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) this year.

Around 2,000 participants from both the local and international community attended the two-day conference, where Idecs in collaboration with the state government gathered 19 experts from major digital economy sectors across eight countries to provide insights into the emerging ‘tech’ economies being embraced by local businesses.

SCOPE also announced partnerships with these reputable organisations, allowing both parties to collaborate and develop programme modules, promote knowledge exchange and allow for academic-industrial collaborative activities such as conferences, publications, workshops and seminars.

This partnership also allows SCOPE to leverage on the expert resources and specialists drawn from these respective institutions.

On the recent initiative on leadership programmes, SCOPE had developed and organised a talk on multi-cultural leadership which was conducted by Tan Sri Dr Surin Pitsuwan, a prominent leader who has served as chair  of the Asean Ministerial Meeting and Asean Regional Forum. He was also appointed member of the National Legislative Assembly before assuming his post as the Asean secretary general from Jan 1, 2008 until Dec 31, 2012.

This is part and parcel of SCOPE’s initiative to organise programmes for small-medium enterprises (SME) conducted by professional experts from both local and international subject matter experts.
