A supermarket at Mile 3 Apas Road here was ordered not to sell its chicken products as they are suspected to be imported from the United States and are not ‘halal’ for Muslim consumers.
Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs (Jheains) district administration officer Imam Abdul Basirun said they had conducted spot check on the supermarket and found the chicken to be suspicious even though the stickers on the boxes showed that they were imported from the Netherlands.
He said the enforcement team had doubts as the stickers looked torn and other stickers were stuck onto them.
“We suspect the chicken were from the USA, only no proof because the stickers were torn. No action was taken but we will check due to public complaints. We will not stop here; we will investigate to get validity,” he said yesterday after an operation at the supermarket following public complaints.
Meanwhile, Department of Veterinary and Animal Industry enforcement officer Rayner Kimsin said the department had instructed the supermarket not to sell the estimated 300 boxes of chicken but to return them to the supplier.
He said the department would return in three days to check whether the suspected chicken were returned.
Rayner said they could not take action against the supermarket because there was no USA sticker found on the boxes in the storage cold room.
