Education Minister Graced the Launching of 2017 CIPTA Award

The Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Products and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) Award 2017 was officially launched by the Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman yesterday at the Lecture Theatre 2 of the Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).

 

The CIPTA Award 2017 is the seventh instalment of the biennial competition organised by UTB, in partnership with Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd. The chosen theme for CIPTA Award 2017 is 'Innovation for Sustainable Economy' to highlight the importance of supporting the nation's vision of cultivating an innovative society that will produce a diversified and sustainable economy based on a culture of knowledge and innovation.

 

The Vice-Chancellor of UTB and Chairperson of CIPTA Award 2017 Executive Committee, Associate Professor Dr. Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, in her welcoming remark underlined that the award has provided a platform for creators who are interested and have high-levels of creativity to produce high-quality innovative products that are beneficial to the welfare of mankind.

 

The launching ceremony also saw a multimedia presentation and the guest of honour was invited to visit an exhibition that showcased inventions and innovation by several previous winners of CIPTA.

 

After the launch, a technical briefing session was conducted by a CIPTA Award 2017 Technical Committee member, Awang Haji Shahrul Tazrajiman bin Haji Tajuddin, in which he provided a detailed explanation on the categories of competition, rules and regulations, assessment process and judging criteria. The briefing was attended by prospective CIPTA participants including teachers, staff and students from various secondary schools and institutions.

 

Among the objectives of CIPTA Award 2017 are to inspire the youth and public to develop creative products, processes or technologies for national and Asean aspirations, to encourage inventions and innovations from the participants, to recognise and award creative talents in the country as well as on the Asean level, to encourage research and development in Brunei Darussalam, promote industrial and manufacturing processes, technological products development, commercialisation and entrepreneurship in Brunei Darussalam.

 

It also aims to motivate and instil the culture of science, engineering and technology in youth as well as to foster collaborative networking within Brunei Darussalam and the Asean region.

 

The competition has three categories, namely Categories 1, 2 and 3 for local participants, the Smart Junior Competition Category and the Asean Category. The competition is open to all schools, technical and tertiary academic institutions, government and private organisations as well as the general public.

 

Winners of the Asean New Invention and Innovation Category will be eligible to compete with winners from Categories I and 2 in the local competition for the Crown Prince Special Award to win the grand prize of $8,000 and the CIPTA Trophy.

 

Registration to enter the contest is already open and the deadline for submitting CIPTA Award 2017 entries is October 31, 2016. More information can be obtained from www.utb.edu.bn/cipta.

 

Also in attendance were the Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar; Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad, Awang Mohamad bin Haji Damit, who is also the Co-chairman of CIPTA Award 2017 Executive Committee; and Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) Dr. Haji Junaidi bin Haii Abdul Rahman.
