The government has set an ambitious plan to increase the annual export of timber and teak products to China, Thailand and Vietnam to at least 30,000 cubic meters by 2020.

The focus of the government for years to come includes the promotion of the issuance of plantation licenses, logging licenses, and value creation in the Lao timber industry.

The Forestry Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in cooperation with the WWF-Laos held a meeting to discuss the promotion of teak plantation and teak wood processing in Luang Prabang Province on 24 August.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr Thongphath Vongmany and more than 60 representatives from the government and private sector.

The two-day meeting provided the participants with an opportunity to discuss several topics including policy and regulations on teak plantation, management, processing and export as well as value creation among teak growers.

Teak plantation is currently promoted in 50 countries around the world with a combined plantation size of about 6 million hectares, including about 30,000 ha in Laos.

The participants also visited a teak growers’ group at Khok Ngiew and a teak processing factory in Luang Prabang Province.
