The British Embassy last Wednesday hosted a farewell reception for 5 new Lao Chevening scholars who will pursue master’s degree courses in United Kingdom.
Application period for the 2018/19 Chevening scholarships has been launched. This year Chevening edition includes a scholarship scheme for Lao tourism professionals.
The Chevening Scholarship scheme is the UK government’s official scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organisations.
The prestigious programme awards outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses (at Master level) at leading UK universities.
This year, 5 Lao will join the 2000 Chevening scholars from around the world and from all professional backgrounds – all of them dynamic future leaders to start a life-changing year of study and discovery in the UK.
They will also become part of an influential global network of almost 50,000 Chevening alumni spanning over 160 countries.
At the farewell reception, British Ambassador Hugh Evans congratulated the 5 Lao scholars on this unique achievement and prepared them for an eye-opening cultural and academic experience.
“It is a great achievement to have been selected for these prestigious and highly competitive awards, the scholars will have the invaluable opportunity to bring back new skills and perspectives for the future benefit of the Lao PDR,” said Ambassador Hugh Evans.
In his speech, he also highlighted the high quality of the British higher education sector.
This year Lao scholars will move to prestigious and high-ranking institutions such as University College London which belong to the global top 10 university, and Queen Mary University of London.
Lao nationals with at least a Bachelor Degree and two years of professional experience can apply for this scholarship at Master level until November 7.
They can freely choose their UK university and study programme, but have to apply at their selected universities in parallel.
Information can be found online at chevening.org as well as on the British Embassy’s Facebook page fb.com/UK in Laos, where advice for applicants is published every week.
The British Embassy will also conduct several Chevening information events throughout Lao in September and October.
A particular highlight of the new period is a special scholarship scheme for professionals from the Lao tourism sector, to study Responsible Tourism Management (MSc) or International Tourism and Hospitality Management (MSc) at Leeds Beckett University in the UK.
