About 60 wooden houses were destroyed in fire at Block 7 and 8, Kampung Titingan yesterday.
District’s Fire and Rescue Department station chief Sharudy Delamin said the fire occurred at about 12.45am and destroyed the houses that were built close to one another.
He said no casualties were reported but an 83-year-old Indonesian man, identified as Sabon Ola, believed to be suffering from heart problem died after he collapsed while fleeing the fire about 150m from his house.
Sharudy said the cause of the fire and losses were being investigated and early investigation found that the fire started from a house occupied by a man called ‘Talak’ who is alleged to have set fire to his house because he was chased away by the house owner for failure to pay the rent.
Sharudy said the fire was put out at 3.50am in an operation that involved 28 policemen, 27 firemen, four Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd personnel, five Rela members and three paramedics.
