One thousand, three hundred and eight graduates received degrees and diplomas in various disciplines at the UBD Convocation this year. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam awarded Doctor of Philosophy and Bachelor's Degrees to 863 graduates yesterday. The ceremony took place at the Chancellor Hall, UBD.

The ceremony began with the reading of surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education and Datin Doctor Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor of UBD.

Also in attendance was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office as the Pro-Chancellor of UBD. The reading of Al-Quran, Surah An-Nahl, verses 77 to 81 was presented by Awang Haji Nasrul Fakhri bin Haji Yahya, an undergraduate from the Bachelors' of Education Degree course, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

In her welcoming address, the Vice Chancellor of UBD among other matters touched on a number of developments carried out by Universiti Brunei Darussalam since the previous convocation ceremony to enhance the 'employability' of the graduates. This included establishing collaborations with several relevant stakeholders and introducing new programmes such as a new post-graduate degree programme in dentistry last August, as part of the collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Apart from that, various Advanced Training programmes for medical doctors in 7 medical specialties or the Specialty Training Programme have also been introduced. This allows doctors to continue their service while undergoing the training. Another new programme that provides opportunities for students while in-service through lifelong learning is the Bachelor of Science in Digital Economy offered by the Centre for Lifelong Learning or C3L early this year.

His Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then delivered the titah of consent to confer the degrees and diplomas to the graduates.

From 863 graduates who received degrees in the morning, 36 received the Doctor of Philosophy, the PhD and 827 received the Bachelor's degree in 'Systems Engineering'. This year, the number of PhD recipients showed a significant increase. 66 international graduates also received degrees at the UBD Convocation today.

UBD has also taken steps to widen and develop education that can give an impact in the international arena, especially in the region. Through the collaboration with a partner university, Viet Nam's FPT University, the UBD began training in the English Language at Da Nang in Viet Nam last month.  FPT University which is owned by the FPT Corporation, the biggest information technology company in Viet Nam, also collaborated with the UBD to run information technology related programmes at the UBD.  Apart from education and training, the collaboration is also hopes to enhance research at the UBD.

Doa selamat was read by the State Mufti.
