More than 20,000 participants were in high spirits as they hit on the new trail of Penang Starwalk which is into its 40th edition this year. 

A sea of crowd converged on the popular seafront promenade of Gurney Drive in front of Gurney Paragon Mall before they were flagged off by Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif on Sunday morning. 

In the past, it was held at other venues namely the Esplanade, Pe­­nang International Sports Arena (now SPICE) and Penang Times Square. 

The 7km walk this time took participants to Jalan Tanjung Tokong and Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang before heading back to the mall via Jalan Tanjung Tokong.

Besides getting a certificate of participation, prizes worth RM200,000 including a Kia Rio car are up for grabs. 

Present at the flag-off with Maimunah was Star Media Group chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, who was seen waving the Jalur Gemilang. 

Sharing the stage with him were Naza Kia Malaysia Sdn Bhd Automotive Group chief executive officer Datuk Samson Anand George, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd head of marketing Patricia Chooi Po-Po, Hunza Properties (Penang) Sdn Bhd executive director Fong Yin Sian, Penang Amateur Athletics Association (PAAA) president Datuk Syed Mohd Aidid Syed Murtaza, Star Media Group Bhd editor-in-chief Datuk Leanne Goh, Star Media Group Berhad regional operations general manager (north) Simone Liong. 

The walk is jointly organised by Star Media Group Bhd and the Pe­­nang Amateur Athletics Association.
