Brunei Darussalam has been fortunate with good air quality throughout the year and hopes that it will continue to be the trend, in awe of the upcoming Golden Jubilee of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam accession to the throne. The Permanent Secretary of Administration and Finance at the Ministry of Development, underlined this matter at the 13th Meeting of the Committee Under The Conference of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Trans-boundary Haze Pollution (AATHP).
Awang Haji Muhammad Lutfi bin Abdullah also said that last year despite of the dry weather spell, the southern ASEAN region has experienced less hotspot, less forest fires and therefore less problems of trans-boundary smoke haze. Around 80 delegates from 10 ASEAN member states including representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre and local authorities such as National Disaster Management Centre, Fire and Rescue Department and Meteorological Department attended the one day meeting. The meeting aims to prevent and monitor trans-boundary haze pollution as a result of land and or forest fires, which need to be mitigated through coordinated national efforts and more intense regional and international cooperation.
