A man has appeared in court charged with sticking toothpicks into bus seats so that commuters pricked themselves when they sat down.

Lim Lye Seng is said to have booby-trapped the bus in this manner as it served a route along the Lower Delta Road in the city-state of Singapore.

Using three toothpicks on each bus seat, the 60-year-old is said to have carried out the anti-social offence on four occasions in the summer of this year.

The act is said to have cost the SBS Transit bus company SG$1,300 (£714 GBP) as it had to have the bus seats re-covered.

It was not clear whether any passengers suffered injuries as a result of Lim’s alleged actions.

He was not represented in court but Singaporean media said he planned to plead guilty at a later hearing.

He said to the court that he planned to hire a lawyer to represent him at his next court appearance on September 27 where he faces up to two years in prison.

The spikes first came to light when a passenger noticed them and posted a picture on social media captioned: ‘Remember to check your seat next time before sitting, guys!’
