BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday morning officiated the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA's 7th Mahrajan Hafl Al-Takharruj or the Convocation Festival. The Mahrajan Haflut Takharruj is held to further enliven UNISSA's Haflut Takharruj or the Convocation Ceremony that will take place on the 16th of this month, and celebrate the graduands who have completed their studies.

Upon arrival, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince as Pro-Chancellor of UNISSA was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education as Chairman of UNISSA Council; Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin Bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs as Deputy Chairman of UNISSA Council; Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Education who is also a member of UNISSA Council, and Doctor Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, the Rector of UNISSA as Chairman of UNISSA's 7th Mahrajan Haflut Al-Takharruj Executive Committee.

The ceremony commenced with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah and doa led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal. His Royal Highness then officiated UNISSA's 7th Mahrajan Haflut Al-Takharruj.

His Royal Highness then proceeded to view the 7th Mahrajan Haflut Al-Takharruj exhibition gallery that showcased the implementation of Shariah law that is enforced in the country. Shariah is not only limited to law itself, it also touched on the capabilities of producing Islamic models based on Shariah such as Muamalat, the Halal Industry, Munakahat and Finance. This year, the Mahrajan Hafl Al-Takharruj carried the theme 'Syariah Memperkasa Generasi Progresif dan Dinamik" or 'Shariah Empowers A Progressive and Dynamic Generation'. The theme was selected to support in the realisation of the "Baldatun Thayyibatun Warabbun Ghafur" and the Zikir Nation vision through the empowerment of Shariah that is inline with the aspiration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The Mahrajan Hafl al-Takharruj is UNISSA's largest annual activity, and is held through collaboration with the Student Affairs Section and the existing faculties in UNISSA. This year, the Convocation Festival is co-conducted by the Student Affairs Section and the Faculty of Shariah and Law. At this festival, His Royal Highness also launched 30 new books published by UNISSA.

The newly published books included 12 titles in Malay, 10 in Arabic and 3 others in English. Apart from that, 4 journals and a monograph on Al-Shafi'i Series were also published. The new books are hoped to become reference materials for the public especially academic researchers. The published books are the result of research and writing by UNISSA's lecturers and foreign academics, and these books will further enrich the reading materials for students and the public.

The Moot Court performance is among the highlights of this year's Mahrajan. "Mooting" is a practical training activity for students in the Faculty of Shariah and Law, and is mandatory for Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Shariah Law students.

His Royal Highness then signed the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre Commemorative Parchment. The centre was recently established and has begun its education programme in August this year. UNISSA has achieved much development and improvements in various aspects since its establishment 10 years ago. As a genuine Islamic higher education institution with international standards that is dynamic and progressive based on Al-Qur'an an As-Sunnah, various efforts have been implemented to improve the academic quality and provide a number of academic programmes to produce A Religious and Progressive Generation.

Subsequently, His Royal Highness viewed the exhibition gallery where a number of departments and sections under the Ministry of Religious Affairs took part. This includes the Islamic Legal Unit, the Halal Food Controller Section, and the Brunei Islamic Religious Council. Also taking part in the exhibition are the Attorney General's Chambers, Shariah Court and the Prisons Department.

At this festival, His Royal Highness received a pasambah in the form of a 'Dacing' which is a replica of a scale made out of copper. The pasambah is symbolic to the theme of the 7th Mahrajan Haflut Al-Takharruj which is 'Shariah Empowers a Progressive and Dynamic Generation'.

The Mahrajan Haflut Al-Takharruj is held until the 15th of this month from 8 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon except on Friday, where it is open from 8 in the morning to 12 in the afternoon, and from 2 to 5 in the afternoon. A number of programmes and activities have been lined up for the festival, including the forum on Cyber Crime and "Tibb Nabawi".
