Firefighters had to rescue a cute little hedgehog that got itself stuck in a football pitch fence.

The incident happened last Thursday morning in Bonn, a city in the Western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

According to the local fire brigade, the curious animal got suck between the bars of a metal fence around a football pitch.

A local discovered the hedgehog in its precarious position with its head sticking out one side of the fence while the rest of its body was still stuck on the other side.

The fire brigade was called who managed to cut the metal bars with big bolt cutter.

The hedgehog was not injured but was visibly exhausted after its little adventure.

The neighbour decided to keep the hedgehog under a large heap of leaves in her garden to rest and recover.

According to the fire brigade, the hedgehog was released the same evening after it had regained enough strength.

Dutch hedgehog expert Tinus Habich who works for the ‘Hedgehog Foundation’ explained that hedgehogs are known for following their noses and that situations such as the one in Bonn in which they get trapped between bars are common.

Habich said: ‘When a hedgehog smells food, this is all he can think about at that moment. They do not think about danger, and that’s why they often get into trouble.’

According to Habich many hedgehogs also get stuck inside pipes.

He said: ‘Hedgehogs cannot walk backwards either, and their spines also prevent it, which is why I have already seen so many of them stuck in all kinds of pipes. I would advise people to make sure such openings are closed off.’
