German and Bruneian relations have been excellent since 1985 when the West German Federal Republic of Germany represented in Brunei with an embassy. Last August, Brunei fertilizer industries and the German engineering company ThyssenKrupp signed a contract for the construction of a urea fertilizer plant with a total investment value of 1.8 billion Brunei Dollars. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Brunei Darussalam stated the matter at a reception to mark the Day of German Unity yesterday.

Representing the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the function was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Bahrin bin Abdullah, the Minister of Development. His Excellency Peter Hermann Wolff in his remarks also said that the industrial project adds a wholly new and very important element to Germany's bilateral economic relations with Brunei. With this project, it will provide one thousand job opportunities to Bruneians and will represent an important step forward in the economic diversification strategy of the government of Brunei Darussalam.
