What are our biggest fears?
Apparently, 7% of men are absolutely terrified of a robot uprising and some dread sharknados.
Yes, there are some people who have admitted to being scared of a robot takeover and the threat of tornadoes filled with sharks.
And 9% of people who took part in a survey commissioned by ‘scare event’ Frightmare said they were scared of a zombie apocalypse.
No, this isn’t a joke. People actually fear things like a dolphin uprising – 1.5% of people, in fact.
Other concerns which strike terror in the hearts of men include box set spoilers, dancing in public and not being able to dink because of antibiotics.
But in general the study of 1,000 Brits found that women are more frightened of modern day phobias than men.
Researchers found that out of 72 modern day phobias, 60 sparked more fear in females than males – everything from an alien invasion to leaving their phone at home.
More than half of women fear being hacked online while 9% of men were afraid of losing their job to a robot.
Women are also 10% more likely to worry about nuclear war and 4% more likely to fear revenge porn.
More traditional phobias included snakes, spiders – and Donald Trump.
Matt Keene at Frightmare, which commissioned the research to tie in with the launch of this year’s event, said: ‘The modern world is moving at an incredibly fast-pace so it’s hardly surprising that we feel the pressure of this in our daily lives.
‘We believe that being frightened in a more tangible, physical way, such as by visiting scare attractions, allows us to remove ourselves from these everyday fears.
‘This can put our phobias into perspective and is ultimately better for our state of mind.
‘It’s also interesting to find that modern life is scarier for women than men.
‘This isn’t necessarily what we see happens at Frightmare where we regularly find men cowering behind women for safety. Perhaps women are better at facing their fears than men.’
