A mysterious and ancient city floating in the middle of the ocean is ‘haunted’ – and its presence in the Pacific has left experts baffled.

New technology has enabled archaeologists to fully explore the ruined city of Nan Madol, which was previously inaccessible due to its extremely remote location.

The bizarre city, found on the cost of the Micronesian island of Ponhpei, consists of 97 gigantic geometrical and individual blocks built on top of a lagoon.

The islands are separated by narrow channels of water and protected by a sea wall – and has led people to compare it to the lost city of Atlantis.

Science Channel series ‘What on Earth?’ discussed the latest finds. Dr Patrick Hunt, archaeologist, told the programme: ‘Why would somebody build a city out on the middle of the ocean? Why here, so far away from any other known civilisation?’

Nan Madol’s name means ‘the space in between’ and the city is a mystery which has left experts scratching their heads.

Explorer George Kourounis said: ‘There’s something strange going on off the coast of the Micronesian island of Ponhpei.

‘There are these tiny islands almost 100 of them that are remarkably similar and geometrically shaped. The reason? It’s not so clear.’

Satellite images from the show document the city’s remoteness, revealing is 2,500 miles from Los Angeles and 1,600 miles from Australia.

It was once inhabited by ancient race about whom very little is known, and could date back to the first or second century.

Archaeologist Dr Karen Bellinger said: ‘As amazing as this side appears from satellite imagery, coming down to ground level its even more outstanding. There are walls 25ft tall and 17ft thick.’

Mr Kourounis said there are reports the city is haunted: ‘Nan Madol has a history of reports of it being haunted. Some people even call it the ghost city.’
