Restoration Crews Working 24/7

Round-the-clock effort: MBPP workers cleaning up a flood-hit area in Ayer Itam.

GEORGE TOWN

: They work tirelessly day and night, but the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) workers are not complaining. All they want is to restore Penang back to its former shine.

MBPP worker Rayyan Iman Abdullah, 38, said all of them have been working a minimum of 14 hours each day since Sunday to help clean the affected areas.

“It’s our duty to the community to help them during this tough time. I believe sacrifices are necessary in this kind of situtation.

“I don’t get to see my family that often, but my wife is quite understanding,” he said.

Workers from other government agencies were also on the ground to help repair the damage caused by the Nov 5 floods.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) technician Ismail Abubakar, 28, and his team have been working round the clock in Bandar Baru Ayer Itam trying to ensure that electricity in that area is functioning normally.

“The entire system was damaged by the floodwaters and we have to replace all of it.

“Sometimes, we have to work until 6am the next day.

“It is tiring, but we can’t lose our focus. We need to get the system running smoothly,” the father of two said.

Early last Sunday, certain parts of the state were without electricity after TNB was forced to shut down 85 sub-stations as a precautionary measure due to the rising waters.

But by 3pm, 48 sub-stations resumed operations and at 7pm, electricity to 56 areas had been restored.
