Supadio International Airport announced that passenger and cargo flight operations resumed on Monday after it was closed for one day due to flooding.

Heavy rain in Kubu Raya regency, West Kalimantan, from Saturday to Sunday resulted in 1- to 1.5-centimeter-deep puddles across the airport’s runway.

The flooding paralyzed Supadio Airport’s activities on Sunday, preventing 90 flights from taking off and landing. Around 8,000 passengers were affected by the closure.

“The runway was reopened this morning,” said Bayuh Iswantoro, general manager of state airport operator Angkasa Pura II’s office at Supadio airport, in Pontianak to The Jakarta Post on Monday.

It was the first time the airport’s runway had flooded, which led to the closure of its operations. Workers were busy drying water on the runway until midnight on Sunday.

Bayuh said even only 1- to 1.5-cm-deep puddles affected aircraft activities; hence, airport authorities had to suspend operations while workers tried to dry puddles and stop water from flowing on the runway. (ebf)
