Geoscientists play a fundamental role in the sustainable development and the restoration and protection of the natural world during and after the exploitation of earth resources. This was stated by Datin Doctor Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrinah binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam during the Opening Ceremony of the 1st International Congress on Earth Science in Southeast Asia. The ceremony took place at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences, UBD.
Datin Doctor Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrinah also said that the contribution as scholars, researchers and stakeholders are extremely important both globally and regionally especially in a time when we are seeing increased and large-scale consequences from careless management of resources. She added that natural disasters, water pollution and climate change are only a few of the effects that we are seeing today but now more than ever, it is crucial that new approaches and policies arising out of hard empirical data and rigorous research be applied to understand, mitigate and alleviate the consequences of careless and unsustainable practices. Over 200 people comprising local and foreign participants are taking part in the Congress. 5 invited speakers from Brunei Darussalam, United Kingdom, Austria and Switzerland will be presenting their keynote papers during the 4-day congress.
