Borneo Island is rich with history and development of civilisation. The Borneo manuscript research seminar will disseminate the history of Borneo to the island's communities specifically youths, to carry out research and writings on its history that is still lacking and incomplete today. According to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, research and writings on Borneo history is vital and require the expansion of historical knowledge as well as its contributions in safeguarding the historical treasure and heritage of the Borneo people of which, much are still kept and have not been researched, either orally or in writing specifically Malay Manuscripts. Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof made the speech at the opening of the Borneo Manuscript Research Seminar and the Archipelago Civilisation Ancient Book and Manuscript Exhibition this afternoon.
Yang Berhormat Pehin also hoped that through the Borneo manuscript research seminar, presenters will be able to share knowledge and experience that can be used as a source of reference that can help make further research easier. Yang Berhormat Pehin added that the seminar is also an invaluable contribution as well as encourages researchers, students and history enthusiasts to conduct expansive research and open up the public's mind on the importance of Borneo history sources in the development of the country and regional areas. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports welcomes the efforts of the Brunei History Centre in organising the seminar as an initiative to introducing the Borneo Research Centre as a centre for historical source and research specifically in relation to the history of Borneo. This is the role of the Brunei History Centre and other relevant institutions, which is to save the nation's history and heritage from disappearing altogether without more comprehensive efforts being made.
The keynote speech at the seminar themed 'Melestari Warisan Bangsa' or perpetuating the Nation's Heritage touched on the manuscript history and content such as the historical knowledge of a government or sultanate, medicine, handicraft, agriculture and religious knowledge. The keynote speech was delivered by Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abd Rahman. The seminar which is the first to be held and organised by the Brunei History Centre is a continuation of the 3rd Borneo History Seminar held in 2013. The seminar is a main project of the Brunei History Centre in line with the department's efforts to make the Borneo Research Centre as a Borneo Centre in reference and research sources on Borneo history.
The Archipelago Civilisation Ancient Book and Manuscript Exhibition was also officiated. The exhibition aimed to expose the community on ancient manuscripts which are more than 100 years old. Also present were Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Juanda bin Haji A.Rashid and Datin Paduka Doctor Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, as well as Yang Berhormat Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Doctor Haji Awang Mohammad Jamil Al-Sufri bin Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Umar, Head of the Brunei History Centre. During the 2-day seminar, 53 working papers will be tabled by presenters from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia.
