The Ministry of Education strongly supports all efforts to instil awareness on the use of safe social media in the school curriculum. It is hoped to enhance understanding, moral elements and good ethics in providing awareness for students on the prudent use of social media. The Minister of education also stressed that the country's education not only takes seriously the field of academics but also gives emphasis and attention towards complete human development by instilling a holistic and dynamic curriculum.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman made the speech this morning at the Social media Learning Package Presentation Ceremony for government and private schools. Yang Berhormat Pehin added that next year, the package will be an added value to teaching and learning materials for educating students using social media in an intelligent, ethical, safe and responsible manner. The initiative can protect and curb children and teens from becoming victims of information-technology progress and educated so that the facility will be used beneficially in a prudent manner without any abuse of social sites or the internet.

Yang Berhormat Pehin said that the effort can also be supported by a number of strategies arranged by the Ministry of Education to achieve the SPN 21 strategy, through 8 policy directions among them, by strengthening competency in info-communication technology, ICT, for students, teachers and education administrators, including ICT integration in school curriculum. The assimilation of ICT in teaching and learning can assist computer knowledge as well as avoid the students from, either purposely or not, becoming the guilty party or victim of cyber-crimes. Yang Berhormat Pehin hoped that the relevant parties such as higher education institutions, can come out with studies that can be used to help the government in curbing such negative matters and give us a choice of ways to face the existing challenges due to information development, specifically social media.

The Social Media Learning Package is targeted towards primary school students in Years 4 to 6 and secondary school students in Years 7 to 9. Also present were Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom Bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Education, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Aziz Bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Yussof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Dayang Nadia Lee Siew Hoon Binti Abdullah, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education.
